United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Thursday praised Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on the sidelines of the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at the UN headquarters in New York.

The two leaders discussed the regional security situation and broader international developments, including Pakistan’s mediation efforts between the United States (US) and Iran and its longstanding role in promoting peace.

Guterres commended Pakistan’s contribution to regional stability and its diplomatic efforts during the meeting that took place as Naqvi held a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening international cooperation against transnational security threats.

Earlier, Naqvi also met Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev to discuss regional security, counterterrorism, counter-narcotics cooperation, cybercrime, law-enforcement training and joint police exercises.

The two sides agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding between their respective ministries to institutionalise bilateral cooperation and reviewed progress on decisions taken during previous talks.

During the meeting, Naqvi said more than 25 terrorist organisations were operating in Afghanistan, stressing that eliminating extremist groups required coordinated international action. He also invited his Russian counterpart to visit Pakistan.

Naqvi also met Chinese Minister of State for Public Security Ling Zhifeng, with both sides reaffirming cooperation on counterterrorism, border management, tackling irregular migration and counter-narcotics efforts.

He highlighted Pakistan’s establishment of a Special Protection Police Force to safeguard Chinese nationals working in the country and called for greater collaboration to curb terrorist financing and strengthen people-to-people ties through easier visa facilitation.

The Chinese minister also praised Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
