An undertrial prisoner allegedly involved in kidnapping and murder cases escaped from District Jail Malir in Karachi during a programme held in connection with Marka-e-Haq, police have said on Sunday.
According to Shah Latif Town SHO (Station House Officer) Mumtaz Marwat, jail authorities discovered that the prisoner had escaped after conducting a headcount of inmates following the event organised inside the prison on Saturday.
The escaped prisoner was identified as Syed Tahir Naveed alias Polka, who had been sent to jail on April 27 after being arrested by Jauharabad police in a kidnapping and murder case involving a trader.
Police said a case was registered against four jail officials over alleged negligence and intentional omission.
The FIR [First Information Report] was lodged by Jailer Waheed Husain against officials Mohsin Ali Meo, Ashraf, Noor Ahmed Bilo and Aziz Mughal under Sections 222 and 223 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Section 222 deals with intentional omission by a public servant to keep a person in confinement or allowing them to escape, while Section 223 relates to escape caused by negligence of a public servant.
SHO Marwat stated that no one has been arrested so far.
The escaped prisoner had previously been acquitted in the murder case of journalist Wali Babar.
Meanwhile, Sindh Jails Minister Ali Hassan Zardari took notice of the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
He directed authorities to investigate how the inmate managed to escape from the prison during the event.
