The United States (US) and Iran have exchanged direct military strikes following the downing of an American helicopter, triggering fears of wider regional escalation that could draw in several Gulf nations.
The strikes began after a US Army Apache helicopter gunship went down off the coast of Oman. Two US officials stated that the helicopter was brought down by an Iranian drone, with a separate source specifying it was an Iranian Shahed drone.
One official noted that it remained unclear whether the drone targeted the Apache intentionally or inadvertently.
In response, US President Donald Trump ordered retaliatory actions. Speaking to ABC News, Trump stated, “They shot down a helicopter, and we are responding as we speak.” He added, “This is a response to what they did with our helicopter last night, and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that’s what this one is”.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the commencement of “self-defence strikes”, describing the operation as a “proportional response” to “unjustified Iranian aggression”.
CENTCOM later announced on X that it had “completed self-defence strikes against Iran,” specifying that “CENTCOM forces struck Iranian air defence, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz with precision munitions from US Air Force and Navy fighter jets.”
Iranian media reported that the US attacks targeted Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm in southern Iran.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the American strikes damaged a telecommunications mast in Sirik and destroyed two water tanks and two desalination plants.
Iranian state broadcaster Press TV later reported that the attacks had subsided and the situation in southern Iran was “calm”.
Following the US strikes, the IRGC launched retaliatory attacks against American bases in the region. The IRGC claimed to have launched a drone strike on the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain at, warning of “heavier responses” if attacks continued.
The IRGC also announced it used missiles to strike four targets at a US base in Al-Azraq, Jordan, stating they “targeted and destroyed four major targets, including F-35 fighter nests at an air base and the US child-killing military control command centre”.
The escalation affected surrounding nations with Jordan intercepting five missiles launched from Iran, while the Kuwaiti army stated that its air defences were engaging hostile aerial targets. The IRGC also claimed to have launched a drone attack on a US base in Kuwait.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned US troops on X, writing, “Despite its defeats on the battlefield, the US opted to test our determination,” and added, “Leave our region if you want to be safe. The history of the Persian Gulf has many chapters on dire fates of intruding outsiders”.
