More than 100 House Democrats voted on Wednesday to eliminate $3.3 billion in annual military aid to Israel, marking a historic rebuke of the longtime US ally as pressure mounts to change course regarding the ongoing war in Gaza.
While the amendment introduced by Republican Representative Thomas Massie was ultimately defeated by a vote of 314–104, the support from 103 Democrats signals a significant shift within the party.
The vote represents a departure from years of near-unanimous support for Israel in Washington. Although Massie, a fiscal conservative, was the only Republican to vote in favour of the measure, the Democratic turnout highlighted a growing consensus among the party’s rank-and-file that the current military assistance is no longer tenable.
The effort divided Democratic leadership, exposing deep internal tensions. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposed the amendment, describing it as “overly broad” and warning that it could inadvertently restrict essential diplomatic operations.
Conversely, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark—the second-highest-ranking Democrat- defied party leadership to support the measure.
“The status quo is not tenable,” Clark said in a statement. “We should not provide a blank check for military aid to any country that does not comply with US law, interests, and values”.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also broke with party establishment to support the amendment, stating that while she viewed the measure as imperfect, she voted “yes” to send a clear message that the current course of the Netanyahu government is unsustainable.
Senator Bernie Sanders also voiced strong support for the effort prior to the vote. In a social media post, Sanders stated: “The American people are clear: no more U.S. aid to Israel.” He further argued: “Congress must focus on the needs of their constituents, not an Israeli government that is undermining American values.”
As midterm elections approach, many Democrats are distancing themselves from unconditional support for Israel, fearing a disconnect with an increasingly progressive base that has demanded an end to taxpayer-funded military subsidies.
