The United States (US) has warned Poland that Russia could be planning an armed provocation against NATO’s eastern flank in the coming months, with Polish officials saying the move could be intended to undermine Western support for Ukraine.

According to Polish news outlets, citing sources close to President Karol Nawrocki, Washington has repeatedly shared intelligence with Warsaw about potential Russian plans targeting Poland.

The reported scenarios include drone or missile strikes on critical infrastructure, simulated air attacks or a limited ground incursion by Russian or Belarusian troops into Polish territory.

Polish intelligence officials said one of the most concerning possibilities was a hybrid operation along the border that Moscow could portray as an accident, such as soldiers crossing into Poland because of a GPS malfunction or under the pretext of recovering a disabled military helicopter.

Security sources believe the objective would be to create a crisis without triggering a full-scale conflict, forcing NATO allies into negotiations rather than a military response. Such a scenario could allow Moscow to claim a political victory while seeking concessions over continued Western military and financial support for Ukraine.

According to reports, the US had been “systematically” informing Poland about evolving Russian plans involving NATO’s eastern flank. Officials in Poland’s defence ministry and diplomatic circles also reportedly described the threat of a Russian-led provocation as credible.

Meanwhile, Poland’s security agencies have not ruled out a limited conventional military incident, although officials stressed that any action would likely stop short of a direct invasion.

The warnings come as concerns grow over Russia’s use of hybrid tactics across Europe. Security analysts have increasingly pointed to drone activity, cyber operations and other forms of unconventional warfare as methods of probing NATO’s defences without escalating into open conflict.
