A wanted man has been killed during a reported police encounter in Peshawar, while two alleged attackers were also shot dead in retaliatory fire, police have said.

According to police officials, two Station House Officers (SHOs) were wounded in the incident.

The incident occurred on the Northern Bypass as officers were transporting the suspect, identified as Mumtaz, to Peshawar after bringing him back from Bahrain through Interpol, the international police cooperation organisation.

According to officials, Peshawar police had contacted their counterparts in Bahrain to seek Mumtaz’s arrest.

Acting on the request, Bahraini authorities detained him in June, police said.

Mumtaz was transferred from Bahrain to Peshawar last night. During the transfer, unidentified assailants opened fire on the police convoy on the Northern Bypass, prompting officers to return fire.

Mumtaz was killed during the exchange, while two of the alleged attackers were also killed in the responding fire, according to police.

Authorities said the attack was allegedly carried out Mumtaz’s rivals.

Police did not provide further details about the identities of those involved or the circumstances surrounding the exchange of fire.

Mumtaz was wanted in connection with multiple criminal and terrorism-related cases, according to police. About 40 First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered against him.

The cases included allegations of extortion, murder, land grabbing and terrorism.

No further information was provided about the identities of the two alleged attackers killed in the exchange or the condition of the two injured SHOs.
