The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an advisory warning that WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive or unregistered SIM cards could become inaccessible.

In a statement on X, the regulatory body said that users must ensure their WhatsApp accounts connect to an active and properly registered SIM. “Your digital identity is your responsibility,” it added.

The authority cautioned that accounts linked to blocked, cancelled, inactive or unregistered SIMs face imminent access issues.

Users are advised to verify their SIM registration status and undergo biometric verification where required. For SIM verification, the regulatory body directed users to visit the nearest franchise or customer service centre.

It urged individuals to transfer their WhatsApp accounts to an active, verified SIM if their current number is no longer functional.

The PTA emphasised that users should act immediately rather than waiting for unexpected logouts, reiterating that a mobile number represents a person’s digital identity.

Alongside the WhatsApp advisory, the authority implemented a nationwide ban on the sale of SIM cards between midnight and 6 am. This measure aims to curb the issuance of illegal SIMs and strengthen the security system.

This directive follows previous regulations from last year, where the telecom regulator reiterated that all mobile SIM cards must be registered under the name of the actual user.

The authority warned that using SIMs registered to other individuals violates regulations and leads to legal action. The PTA clarified that the registered subscriber remains fully accountable for any misuse of the SIM card.
