Meta has officially introduced a subscription-based premium tier across its major platforms, marking a foundational shift for services that have remained free for decades. Following weeks of quiet testing that began in March, Meta Head of Product Naomi Gleit announced the rollout of Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus. The premium versions offer advanced features focused on customization, messaging, and audience engagement that are unavailable on the standard, free versions of the apps.
Under the new pricing structure, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus cost $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus is priced at $2.99 monthly. Instagram and Facebook subscribers gain access to detailed story statistics, expanded story controls, profile personalization tools, animated reactions, and the ability to extend vanishing posts beyond 24 hours. WhatsApp Plus users receive premium stickers, exclusive ringtones, app themes, and expanded pinned chat capabilities.
Meta is organizing these premium tiers alongside its artificial intelligence offerings under a single umbrella brand called Meta One. As part of this strategy, the company is adopting a freemium model for Meta AI. The core AI platform will remain free, but users can access advanced features through paid subscription tiers. Meta plans to test AI-focused subscription tiers priced at $7.99 and $19.99 per month in select international markets. These plans will provide expanded access to compute-intensive tools, advanced reasoning capabilities, additional image and video generation features, and integration with Meta’s AI glasses.
The company is also developing specialized subscription plans for creators and businesses to provide enhanced profile visibility, audience insights, and account support features. These new offerings operate separately from Meta Verified, the company’s existing account verification product. Following reports of the subscription rollout, Meta shares rose nearly five percent over five trading sessions.
