Police in Lahore have decided to ensure the presence of women police officers at all 84 police stations across the city around the clock to provide assistance and legal support to women.
According to the police, the decision is aimed at creating an environment where women can register complaints and seek help at any time, including during the night.
Lahore Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran said that the initiative would ensure that women do not face difficulties when approaching police stations after regular working hours.
He added that complaints related to domestic violence, harassment and other issues involving women would receive an immediate response.
The DIG added that the move was intended to make the police more accessible to women and strengthen public trust.
The decision comes after two recent incidents involving women at police stations in Lahore.
In one case, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman with a mental health condition at the Ghaziabad police station.
In another incident, two girls died while in police custody at the Township police station on August 4.
The girls had been brought to the police station after being accused of stealing cash and gold jewellery from a house. According to reports, their condition worsened while they were in custody, and both later died.
Earlier, Faisal Kamran had directed police officials not to keep women at police stations after sunset.
During a crime-control meeting with City Division officers, he instructed officials to ensure that women, whether complainants or suspects, were treated with respect and were not kept at police stations after Maghrib, drawing backlash from the general public.
