A National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) official has been suspended after footage of him publicly confronting a young man on the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway surfaced on social media.
In the video, the officer accused the driver of engaging in an indecent act with a female passenger, attempting to run him over and offering a bribe. The young man rejected the accusations, questioning the officer for staging a public trial on camera. The video showed the driver’s face blurred throughout the interaction.
The NHMP acknowledged the officer’s mishandling of the situation. Senior authorities took notice as the video gained traction online, resulting in the official’s suspension and the initiation of a formal inquiry.
The incident triggered widespread outrage on social media, with netizens criticising the officer’s actions.
One user stated, “Pakistan is rape capital for young boys and underage girls and they wanna arrest consensual couple in their own car. Next they will check nikah nama of married couples.”
Another commenter noted, “Your car is your home. It has same sanctity as home. No to moral policing. No to Talibanization of any kind.”
A third user questioned, “Since when did this moral policing start? Who are they to harass that couple? This is not a banana republic. There will be consequences. Police above all should remember that.”
Expressing frustration over public boundaries, a commenter remarked, “I don’t expect much less from motorway police or anyone here, People in Pakistan do not understand the concept of Personal space.”
Another observer posted, “Mullahs have infested motorway police too!”. Demanding strict action, one user wrote, “Fire this stupid.”
Directly tagging the authorities, one person mentioned, “@NHMPofficial plz look into this. Your officer is over stepping.”
Another user shared, “All these police officers are cursed, this is the only thing they want to catch.”
