New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the Allama Iqbal Community Center’s (AICC) Mela in New York to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day, according to a post on his official X account.
“Yesterday, I gathered with residents at the Allama Iqbal Community Center’s Mela to commemorate Pakistan’s Independence Day and honor the contributions Pakistani New Yorkers have made to our city,” Mamdani wrote.
The Mela was held on Sunday, August 9, as part of Pakistan Independence Day celebrations organised by the Allama Iqbal Community Center in Brooklyn.
Mamdani also said that the Pakistani community’s “open arms, determination, and dreams for a better life” had helped shape New York.
The AICC has been serving the Pakistani-American community in the New York area for almost two decades. The organisation was established in 2008 after members of the Pakistani community came together to create a platform focused on community support.
AICC provides community, educational and cultural programmes for Pakistani-American families. Its work includes youth advocacy, community development, food drives, refugee support, training and social services.
