Viral videos on social media have claimed that KP CM Sohail Afridi was on Monday night “taken into custody” by Punjab Police in Lahore and later “abandoned” near Lakshmi Chowk.

The government, however, has rubbished said claims as Punjab Info Minister Azma Bokhari said the KP CM had boarded a police vehicle of his own accord.

In the video shared by Bokhari, Afridi could be seen voluntarily walking towards and boarding the police vehicle. He then refuses to dismount, while an individual can be heard asking the chief minister to “please leave the vehicle”.

Pakistan’s smoking problem is not ending with quitting campaigns alone.

The country has 22.7 million tobacco users, while the proportion of smokers attempting to quit has remained largely unchanged over the past decade. This has brought renewed attention to Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR), an approach for smokers who are unable to quit cigarettes altogether.

Sweden and Japan have shown how harm reduction can play a role in reducing smoking rates. Pakistan can draw from these experiences too, with the Association for Smoking Alternatives in Pakistan (ASAP) bringing the evidence-based THR conversation into the country.
