Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam has pushed back on the growing focus around strike rates after his side beat Multan Sultans by 24 runs to record their fifth win in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11, consolidating their place at the top of the points table.
Kusal Mendis top-scored with 68 while Sufiyan Muqeem claimed a three-wicket haul as Zalmi put in another complete team performance.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Babar said that reading conditions matter more than chasing a number.
“In my opinion, the most important thing is to assess the conditions first. For example, the Karachi pitch where we scored 240 runs was completely different from the next day, when we struggled to score even 180. Every day is different, every pitch behaves differently, and you cannot play the same way every time,” he said.
He acknowledged the opposition’s role but stressed the need for smart cricket over aggressive intent alone.
“You will face challenges, and the opposition team also comes prepared with plans against you. You cannot just go in and start hitting big shots blindly. If it’s your day, things will go your way, but if not, you need to adjust and work hard,” Babar said.
On batting position and role, he added, “I always try to understand the situation and what the team requires from me. If I am batting in the top order, especially in the first six overs, I know I have to utilise the powerplay but also focus on building a partnership. It’s important to decide which bowler to take risks against and when.”
Babar also highlighted the value of partnerships in managing pressure situations.
“If one batter is struggling, the other gives him support and reduces the pressure. Once both players settle, the game becomes completely different and much easier to control,” he said.
On the team’s overall approach this season, Babar kept it straightforward.
“I am thoroughly enjoying playing this season. Our players are working hard in every department. Our effort is to perform well in every match. We have learned a lot from our mistakes,” he said.
Peshawar Zalmi currently sits at the top of the PSL 11 standings with 11 points from six matches, winning five and having one washed out.
