Actor Ayesha Omar has supported growing calls against sexual violence targeting women, asking why society expects women to prevent male violence instead of questioning the men who commit it.
“Men have raped women. Children. Animals. Even dead bodies. But somehow the problem is still: her clothes. her timing. her being outside,” read the post she shared to her Instagram story.
“At what point do we stop asking women to prevent male violence and start asking why men keep committing it?”
Her post comes as dozens of rape cases continue dominating headlines across the country.
Most recently, police registered a case over the alleged gang rape of an Azerbaijani woman who travelled to Pakistan for business.
According to police, three men assaulted her in a rented flat near Raiwind on the night between Friday and Saturday. Police have arrested at least two of the three main suspects and are searching for the third.
This is the second case in four months in which a foreign woman was reportedly gang-raped in Lahore.
Apart from this, reports of sexual violence have drawn attention in Lahore in recent weeks. According to reports, six women were allegedly raped and three young girls were sexually assaulted in different places in Punjab over the past few days.
