Off the pitch, Hayen embraced the local culture. Although separated from his family back in Belgium, he immersed himself in his work and built strong relationships with the people around him. His dedication and calm demeanor earned him the admiration of players, staff, and fans alike.

A Career-Defining Opportunity

Despite his success in Wales, Hayen’s ultimate dream lay elsewhere. That dream took shape in 2022 when Belgian football powerhouse Club Brugge approached him to manage their under-23 team, Club NXT. Although the decision to leave Haverfordwest was difficult, Hayen knew this was a life-changing opportunity.

His initial role involved developing young talent in the Belgian second division, but fate had larger plans. After ups and downs in the Club Brugge first team under previous managers, Hayen was given his chance. When Ronny Deila was dismissed in March 2024, Hayen stepped in as interim head coach.

Leading Club Brugge to Glory

Many doubted Hayen could replicate his earlier success on a bigger stage. Yet, not only did he guide Club Brugge to victory in nine of their final ten games, but he also shocked fans and pundits by winning the league title through the playoff phase. Club Brugge’s triumph came against all odds, earning Hayen the role of permanent manager in June 2024.

Building on his philosophy of teamwork and tactical flexibility, Hayen crafted a side capable of competing with Europe’s elite. The 2024 Champions League group stage proved this. Now, Club Brugge is set to face Aston Villa once again in the knockout stages. It’s a fitting test for Hayen, who has already demonstrated his ability to outsmart high-profile teams.
