Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has said that the Asia Cup trophies won by India’s men and women’s teams will eventually reach the board’s headquarters in Mumbai.
Speaking in Mumbai on Friday after the BCCI’s 95th Annual General Meeting, Saikia said, “Asia Cup trophies… we hope it will come one day. I will not give you a timeline, but I can assure you that both the trophies will come up and land up in this BCCI head office at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.”
His remarks follow last week’s incident where India’s women players refused to accept their winners’ medals and the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the PCB chief and Pakistan’s interior minister. The moment echoed a similar snub during the men’s Asia Cup final in Dubai last September.
A comparable situation could unfold again at the ongoing Asian Games, where the cricket competition falls under the ACC’s jurisdiction. Both India’s men and women’s teams are expected to reach their respective gold-medal matches.
After India’s women beat Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the Women’s Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday, the team held its own medal presentation instead. Fielding coach Munish Bali handed out the award for best fielder, which went to Nandani Sharma for her two diving catches in the final.
Saikia and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla presented her with the medal.
The boycott traces back to cross-border tensions between Pakistan and India in May 2025, after which India’s players stopped shaking hands with Pakistan players and officials. Nearly a year ago, the Suryakumar Yadav-led men’s team skipped the post-match presentation entirely after beating Pakistan in the Asia Cup final.
Organisers delayed that ceremony and handed medals only to the runners-up.
