Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi has personally invited former captain Daren Sammy to attend the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 final at Gaddafi Stadium this Sunday, responding to a wave of fan requests after his team secured a spot in the title match.
Afridi extended the invitation through an Instagram story, tagging Sammy directly. “Brother, we are officially inviting you to witness the final match of Zalmi (fans request),” he wrote.
Sammy holds a special place in Zalmi’s history. The former West Indies captain led the franchise in four PSL seasons and captained them to their only title in PSL 2, when Zalmi beat Quetta Gladiators in the final.
He played 49 matches for the franchise, scoring 691 runs at a strike rate of 146.39 and taking nine wickets. Of the 39 games he captained, Zalmi won 22.
This season, Babar Azam’s Zalmi have been the team to beat. They topped the league stage with eight wins, one loss and one washout from 10 games, finishing on 17 points and a net run rate of 2.324. They then confirmed their place in the final by defeating Islamabad United in the Qualifier at Gaddafi Stadium.
Sunday’s final will be Zalmi’s fifth appearance in the PSL championship match. Their opponents will be Kingsmen, who beat Multan Sultans in Eliminator 1 to advance. Islamabad United, who fell to Kingsmen in Eliminator 2, are out of the tournament.
