Lionel Messi’s legal team has announced it will launch legal proceedings against Argentinian media outlets accused of violating his family’s privacy during a farewell ceremony held for his father Jorge Messi in Rosario.
Jorge Messi, Lionel’s father and long-time agent, died overnight between Friday and Saturday at a clinic in Rosario. He was 68 and had been battling a prolonged illness. The private farewell ceremony took place on Sunday, with only close family and friends in attendance.
According to reports, several outlets broke through security measures and crossed agreed boundaries while chasing coverage of the ceremony. Messi’s legal team says the outlets will now have to answer for their conduct in court. Messi flew back to Miami immediately after the funeral.
This is not the first time the family has faced unwanted media attention this year.
During the 2026 World Cup, while Jorge was undergoing treatment, false reports of his death circulated publicly, prompting national team coach Lionel Scaloni to personally deny the rumors.
The Messi family also issued a public appeal to the media at the time, asking for “humanity.”
