England all-rounder Moeen Ali has opened up about his decision to join Pakistan Super League (PSL) side Karachi Kings over returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL), pointing to limited playing time and a desire to keep his career going on his own terms.
The 38-year-old, who represented Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025, played just six matches and batted only twice, scoring five runs. The lack of regular involvement left him frustrated.
“At this stage, I want to be out there, I want to bat. I feel like I’m playing good cricket towards the back end of my career, and I just want to keep going,” he said during a recent podcast.
Moeen said the PSL’s shorter format and the city of Karachi both played a role in drawing him in. “There are a few reasons. I’m 38 now, and I still want to play, do well, and extend my career as much as possible. Karachi was a big factor in my decision to come here. It’s a shorter competition, which works better for my family and me.”
He also admitted that a scheduling clash had kept him away from the PSL for years despite his interest in the tournament. “I’ve always wanted to experience the PSL, but unfortunately, it slightly clashes with the IPL.”
On the uncertainty that comes with any franchise cricket, Moeen remained pragmatic. “You’re never guaranteed a place anywhere, even here, but I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can.”
Moeen is currently representing Karachi Kings in PSL 2026 and is earning approximately Rs 2.14 crore in the tournament.
