Ben Stokes ignited a fresh debate in English cricket on Tuesday evening, declaring that Harry Brook possesses more raw talent than Kevin Pietersen after watching his captain destroy Sri Lanka’s bowling attack in Southampton.
Brook walked out at The Rose Bowl and smashed an unbeaten 114 off just 49 balls, hitting ten fours and six sixes. He took apart left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage in one over alone, striking six boundaries. His 128-run stand with Jos Buttler came off only 60 balls and powered England to 254 for four in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka never recovered from the onslaught. Sonny Baker, playing on his home ground for Hampshire, took 3 for 12 on his white-ball international debut as Sri Lanka collapsed to 135 all out. England won by 119 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The century marked Brook’s first in 18 international innings across all formats, with his last one coming in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in February. It stands as England’s joint second-fastest century in T20 history.
Stokes wasn’t just celebrating the innings. He was reacting to criticism aimed at Brook for going more than a year without a Test century.
“I don’t even think the genius of KP could come close to what Harry Brook has talent-wise,” he wrote on X. “Is it really that hard to just sit back and admire these players for what they are, on the good days and the bad days, and stop berating them for doing things that we would never, ever, ever even think of doing because we simply aren’t on their level to think that way? You are an absolute freak, Harry. You’re mint to watch.”
Stokes later softened his stance slightly, aware that Pietersen, now England’s white-ball mentor, had watched the innings from the stands. “Bit harsh on KP actually; both are freak talents but Brook better IMO is my point,” he added.
