Pakistan’s national cricketers will be required to play padel as part of long-duration training camps after new courts were established at the National Cricket Academy.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has introduced padel facilities at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), allowing players to enjoy the sport alongside their cricket training without having to travel elsewhere.
The initiative is aimed at improving players’ fitness and providing a more engaging environment during extended training camps.
Speaking to Geo News, High Performance Director Aaqib Javed said that the PCB had introduced padel courts at the NCA to ensure players had access to modern training and recreational facilities without leaving the premises.
He explained that the initiative was designed to improve players’ fitness, enhance their overall development and create a more productive environment during long training camps.
“Previously, players had to travel to play padel, but that is no longer the case. We want to provide an environment and facilities during long camps that help improve the players’ overall performance,” he said.
Aaqib revealed that playing padel would be mandatory every other day during lengthy training camps, with players expected to spend around 40 minutes on the court.
“It is not necessary for players to only play cricket during long camps. Padel will be compulsory every alternate day. The sport improves fitness, while its movement patterns are directly linked to fielding, making it highly beneficial for cricketers,” he explained.
The former Pakistan pacer further said the PCB was planning to expand the range of sporting and recreational facilities at the National Cricket Academy as part of its long-term high-performance programme.
He stressed that exposing players to different sports and leisure activities would not only enhance their athletic abilities but also help maintain their mental freshness and overall well-being during extended training camps.
“Basketball will also benefit cricketers, and we are establishing game rooms featuring snooker and other indoor games. Around the world, professional athletes do not only play their primary sport; they also participate in other sports and activities that contribute to their overall development,” Aaqib added.
Pakistan’s squad is currently gearing up for its upcoming tour of the West Indies, which begins with a tour match in Tarouba on July 18, followed by a two-match Test series starting July 25.
