The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued an update on skipper Babar Azam’s injury, which he sustained during the national team’s warm-up fixture against Professional County Cricket (PCC) Select XI on Friday.

Babar was batting on five in the 39th over when a delivery from fast bowler Manny Lumsden, pitching outside off, struck his hand. The right-hander was seen suffering in pain and receiving treatment from the medical staff before retiring hurt.

The board released a statement confirming Babar will not take further part in the practice match. “Following an assessment by the team doctor and taking precautionary measures, Babar has been advised to take rest from the remainder of the practice match,” the statement read.

The PCB confirmed that Babar will, however, join the team’s practice session on Monday, August 17, at the Headingley Cricket Ground.

This marks the second time Babar has taken a blow to the hand in recent months. He suffered a similar injury during Pakistan’s chase against West Indies in the second Test.

During the warm-up, Pakistan were bowled out for 238 in 71.2 overs on day two, replying to PCC Select XI’s first innings total of 305.

Abdullah Shafique top-scored for Pakistan with 61 off 132 balls, hitting nine fours and a six. Saud Shakeel added 30 off 53 balls with six fours, while Imam Ul Haq contributed 37 off 71 balls, including five boundaries.

For PCC Select XI, Shoaib Bashir took four wickets, while Saif Zaib and Manny Lumsden shared four wickets between them.

On day one, Pakistan’s bowlers put up a strong performance to dismiss PCC Select XI. Saif Zaib and Caleb Falconer were the standout batters for the home side, adding 110 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the innings. Zaib top-scored with 65 off 69 balls, hitting 12 fours, while Falconer made 59 off 89 balls with nine boundaries.

Mohammad Ali and Mohammad Abbas picked up three wickets each for Pakistan, Khurram Shahzad took two and Aamir Jamal and Ali Usman claimed one wicket apiece.

Pakistan will play their first Test against England on August 19 at Headingley.
