Portuguese footballing star Cristiano Ronaldo could not stop laughing after hundreds of fans and journalists showed up outside a cathedral in Madeira, believing they were about to witness his wedding to long-time partner Georgina Rodriguez.
It all started with social media rumours that Ronaldo would be getting married to Georgina over the weekend in Funchal, his birthplace on the Portuguese island. Crowds soon packed the square outside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, hoping to catch a glimpse of the footballer.
The wedding taking place inside, however, belonged to a different couple, Fabio and Nicole, who are not connected to Ronaldo at all.
As footage and reports of the chaotic scenes started circulating, Ronaldo responded in the comments section of an Instagram post with a string of laughing emojis.
The reaction quickly made it clear that the claims had no truth to them.
