Saudi Arabia has executed a Bangladeshi man and a woman convicted of committing indecent acts inside a mosque in the holy city of Makkah, the Interior Ministry announced.
The ministry named the two as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, both Bangladeshi nationals. The Saudi Press Agency carried the ministry’s statement.
According to the statement, security authorities arrested the pair after they committed what the ministry described as immoral acts inside a mosque in Makkah. Investigators then charged them and referred the case to a competent court.
The court found them guilty and sentenced them to death under ta’zir, a discretionary punishment in Islamic law. The ministry said the court took into account the seriousness of the offence, the violation of the mosque’s sanctity and the circumstances of the acts.
The relevant judicial authority upheld the verdicts, which made them final, and a royal order authorised the executions. Authorities carried them out on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in the Makkah region.
The ministry said that the government remains committed to maintaining security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law against anyone who violates the sanctity of mosques.
It warned that the kingdom’s laws will punish anyone who commits similar offences.
