Iranian players left a handwritten note in the SoFi Stadium locker room after their 0-0 draw with Belgium on Sunday, thanking Los Angeles for its hospitality and declaring that they leave the city with dignity.
Iran’s football federation released the note, which opened with a nod to the country’s history before addressing the support they received from fans in the stands.
“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast,” the note read.
“Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality. We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity,” it added.
The message also thanked Iranian supporters who gave their “heart, voice and soul” during both matches in the city, and closed with a call for peace, respect and friendship among all nations.
The draw keeps Iran in contention for the knockout stages. They sit unbeaten in Group G after also drawing 2-2 with New Zealand in their opener at the same stadium.
Los Angeles hosted both of Iran’s group matches, with the squad commuting from their base in Tijuana, Mexico between games. Several team staff and officials could not travel to the United States (US) due to restrictions, and coach Amir Ghalenoei has spoken openly about the difficulties his side faced throughout the tournament.
“The conditions are very difficult for us,” Ghalenoei said after the Belgium match. He has maintained that no other team at the World Cup has had to deal with the same challenges.
Iran face Egypt in Seattle in their final group match, with a place in the round of 32 still within reach.
