Jude Bellingham struggled to contain his frustration after England’s 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina on Wednesday, getting into a heated clash with several players in the moments after the final whistle.
Footage shows Bellingham standing near a group of celebrating Argentine players when he suddenly walked over and slapped reserve Valentin Barco on the back of the head.
It remains unclear whether Barco said something to provoke him, but the incident quickly drew in other players from both teams, sparking a wider argument.
A video captured the angle of the slap clearly. Multiple teammates had to hold Bellingham back.
The post game clash was not an isolated moment of frustration for the 23-year-old midfielder.
Earlier in the game, he had exchanged what appeared to be trash talk with Lionel Messi. After Argentina scored their winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time, Bellingham also began jawing with Rodrigo De Paul in the center circle.
Bellingham had been one of the standout performers of the tournament heading into the semi-final, but he struggled in Wednesday’s crucial clash. He finished the match without a single shot or created chance and did not register a touch inside Argentina’s box. He also absorbed several hard tackles, including one from Messi that went uncalled.
It remains unclear whether Bellingham will face any punishment for the incident, since it occurred after the final whistle. England is scheduled to face France in the third place match on Saturday, but Bellingham’s involvement in that game could be at risk if FIFA decides to sanction him.
