Bangladesh have won the first Test against Pakistan by 104 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Chasing 268 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Pakistan were bowled out for 163 in their second innings as Bangladeshi bowlers ran through the lineup on a turning Mirpur pitch.
Earlier, Noman Ali claimed three wickets for 76 while Hasan Ali claimed three for 52. It, however, was not enough to save the match with the bat.
Bangladesh declared their second innings at 240-9 in the morning session of day five, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scoring with 87 off 150 and Mominul Haque contributing 56 off 120. Taskin Ahmed’s dismissal triggered the declaration, with Shanto deciding a lead of 267 gave his side enough to push for a win.
Pakistan lost Imam Ul Haq early in the chase and never recovered as Bangladesh bowled the team out 104 runs short of target.
The declaration also followed a rain-hit day four. Shanto and Mominul, who had already put on 170 runs together in the first innings, added another 105-run partnership to push Bangladesh’s lead past 150. Mominul also brought up 5,000 Test runs during the day while Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed him late in the final session before bad light ended play.
Pakistan had earlier posted 386 in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh’s 413, with Azan Awais top-scoring with 103 off 165 and Abdullah Fazal contributing 60 off 120. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took five wickets for 102 while Taijul Islam chipped in with two wickets for 46 runs.
Bangladesh had posted 413 in their first innings, with Shanto scoring 101 off 130 and Mominul hitting 91 off 200. Mohammad Abbas finished as Pakistan’s best bowler with 5-92 while Shaheen stood at 3-113.
On day one, Shaheen dismissed Mahmudul Hasan for 8 and Hasan Ali removed Shadman Islam for 13, leaving Bangladesh at 37 for two before Shanto and Mominul steadied the innings with their 170-run stand, taking Bangladesh to 301 for four at stumps.
