A 25-year-old man, Hanif Katiar, was allegedly killed in police custody at Rahuki police station in Hyderabad on Sunday.

His family claimed that the Station House Officer (SHO) Iqbal Abbassi is responsible for the alleged murder of Hanif in custody.

First Information Report (FIR) was filed by the victim’s brother, Insaf Katiar, against five policemen including three officers of the Rahuki police station.

According to the complainant, the two brothers left their house, located in a village in Jhando Mari taluka of Tando Allahyar district on a Saturday morning to sell their livestock in a cattle market in Tando Adam, Sanghar district. When they were leaving for a house, SHO Abbassi and his accomplices wearing civil dress stopped them. They started beating Hanif and took him away in a private car.

The next day (Sunday) at 10 am in the morning, his family found out that Hanif has been killed in police custody and his body has been shifted to Liaquat University Hospital.

However, the accused policemen escaped from arrest, and their families claimed to be unaware of their whereabouts.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hyderabad Pir Muhammad Shah took notice of the incident and directed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sajid Amir Saddozai to submit a report of custodial death.

Media was not allowed in the premises of the hospital to know regarding the initial assessment of his post-mortem. Police were deployed outside the office of the police surgeon.

The victim’s family also held a protest in front of the hospital. However, a policeman took them to SSP Hyderabad and he gave his assurance that police would lodge an FIR and fairly investigate the case.
