The ninth season of the ITV drama Grantchester has sparked a lot of buzz lately. This series premiered on Wednesday. It is on air with Rishi Nair introducing the new character, Reverend Alphy Kottaram. Kottaram is the third actor to bring this village's character to life after Tom Brittney’s heartbreaking exit as Will Davenport in last week's episode. Tom Brittney wrapped up his filming for the series and is set to make his exit from the show. However, the episode will not only feature the character during his final appearance but still offer some gripping storylines in store for the audience.

A new episode recap from Radio Times shows, “Grantchester has a new vicar in the form of Alphy Kottaram. However, Geordie manages to get off on the wrong foot with him. The pair soon find themselves teaming up to investigate the murder of a local landowner."

The other characters viewed Will as such a beloved character in the series that some viewers questioned the strategy behind the new vicar. Some wondered how the show would continue without Will since the new vicar wasn’t able to gain the love of all the fans.

Social media did have mixed responses about the new vicar. While others seemed apprehensive about the character's change, several delighted over Tom Brittney’s absence. It made them miss the character of Will.

Despite missing numerous appearances in the newer episodes, Tom Brittney is still expected to deliver a spectacular performance in his final appearance. This transformation is bound to leave viewers feeling melancholy as he can never return to his ecclesiastical duties. Unfortunately, this decision has disappointed many excited fans.

A user wrote on X, “I am still missing Will. Things are not the same without him, but yes, Alphy is growing on me, and it is hilarious #Grantchester.”

A second user confessed, “I do not dislike Alphy at all. It’s just hard for me to come to terms with Will not being here. I’m sure I will; it is just that I am still in denial that he is gone.

Most of them: "We are all missing Will," and "I don't think I will ever get accustomed to life without Will for a while!"

"I'm sorry, Alphy is fine, but bring Will back! It just isn't the same without him!" said one fan. However, some quickly embraced Alphy, dubbing him a "lovely addition."
