United States (US) Vice President JD Vance has heaped lavish praise on Pakistan for its role in mediating discussions between Washington DC and Tehran following the conclusion of the Islamabad Talks.
Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Vance acknowledged the efforts of Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir in facilitating the high-stakes dialogue.
Negotiations between the US and Iran concluded in Islamabad on Saturday without an agreement but a ceasefire still in place. These talks represent a rare instance of direct engagement between the two nations, which Vance noted had not engaged in serious discussions for a significant duration.
During the interview, the American Vice President called the Pakistani leaders “incredible statesmen” and thanked them for their hospitality during the process.
Vance emphasized that Pakistan’s involvement was central to bridging the communication gap. He stated, “I have to give a lot of credit to Field Marshal Munir and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, both who are incredible hosts, and, I think, incredible statesmen and helping mediate the conversation between us and the Iranians.”
Earlier the Vice President clarified that the outcome of the negotiations remained independent of the efforts made by the host nation. He said that any failure to reach specific agreements did not reflect on Pakistan’s performance as a mediator.
According to Vance, the Pakistani side made significant attempts to help the two parties find common ground.
The discussions focused on resolving long-standing issues between the US and Iran, with Pakistan providing the neutral ground required for the delegations to meet face-to-face.
