Pakistan have suffered a double punishment after the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, losing both the match and a whopping eight ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points due to a slow over-rate.
As per the details, Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the penalty, ruling that Pakistan finished eight overs short of the required target after accounting for all permitted time allowances.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players receive a five per cent match fee fine for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
While Pakistan’s eight-over shortfall translated into a 40 per cent fine across the squad, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC WTC playing conditions deducts one point per over short, resulting in an eight-point deduction from the Greenshirts’ championship tally.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood admitted the offence and accepted the sanction, after which no formal hearing took place.
Earlier, the charge was levelled by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Kumar Dharmasena, third umpire Allahuddien Palekar and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel.
The disciplinary blow followed Bangladesh’s 104-run victory – their first-ever home Test win against Pakistan.
The result moved Bangladesh to the sixth slot of the ICC WTC 2025-27 standings with 16 points and a win percentage of 44.44 from three matches. Pakistan, on the other hand, dropped down to seventh rank.
