Suryakumar Yadav has been removed as India’s T20 captain and is unlikely to be considered for selection going forward just three months after he led the side to the T20 World Cup title on home soil.
According to Indian media reports, Yadav’s prolonged poor form with the bat proved a significant factor in the decision. Over the last two years, Suryakumar’s batting has declined steadily, with the 2026 IPL season offering little relief. He managed only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76, with a half-century against the Rajasthan Royals standing out as a rare bright spot.
Suryakumar had taken over the captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired from the format following India’s 2024 World Cup triumph in the West Indies. Even as he guided India to their third T20 World Cup title in March this year, his batting continued to draw heavy scrutiny.
According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in consultation with the team management and selection committee, will now appoint a new captain as the side enters a fresh cycle.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on,” a top BCCI official told Indian media. “Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” he added.
The official added that the decision will be conveyed to Suryakumar soon and that he will not be considered for selection.
India are scheduled to play two T20Is in Ireland before five matches in England, with both tours starting later this month.
