The United States (US) Embassy in Islamabad hosted a landmark event to mark the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, bringing together senior figures from government, sports and civil society.
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Mohsen Gilani, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan and Lahore Qalandars Chief Executive Atif Rana attended the ceremony.
US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A Baker said that it was an honour that the first FIFA World Cup-related event in Pakistan was being hosted at the embassy. She noted the positive progress in football development across the country and acknowledged Pakistan’s important role in the tournament.
Baker highlighted that Pakistan manufactures world-class footballs for global use, and said that the US is fully prepared to welcome fans from around the world. She added that sports, particularly football, serves as a powerful bridge for strengthening ties and understanding among nations.
PFF President Mohsen Gilani said football is helping deepen relations between Pakistan and the US, and described FIFA as a force that unites nations through the spirit of the game.
Gilani highlighted two significant milestones for Pakistani football, including the national women’s team participating in a FIFA event for the first time and securing a victory, and the appointment of a woman as manager of the men’s national team.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, will be the biggest in history, featuring 48 teams for the first time. It kicks off on Jun 12.
