Bushra Bibi was moved back to Adiala Jail after undergoing an eye operation at a private hospital in Rawalpindi, prison authorities said Friday.
According to a statement issued by Adiala officials, Bushra had reported vision issues in her right eye, after which she was examined by ophthalmologists. The jail superintendent said that she was diagnosed with retinal detachment in the right eye, and surgery was advised.
She was shifted to a hospital in Rawalpindi on Thursday evening, where tests were conducted before the procedure. Officials said that she consented to the operation.
The surgery was carried out by Professor Dr Nadeem Qureshi and a medical team, according to the statement.
“The patient was discharged after the surgery and one night’s hospital stay,” the superintendent said, adding that she was shifted back to jail.
He said that follow-up examinations would be conducted as per medical advice.
Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that he had been informed that Bushra had been taken to the hospital.
“I was informed [through] a message that Bushra Bibi had been shifted to the hospital last night and that I would be briefed about the treatment,” he said, adding that a request would be submitted to allow her family to meet her, and also for Imran Khan’s family to be allowed access to him.
“The earlier, the better. It is their basic right according to law,” he said.
Meanwhile, a document circulating on social media, dated March 28, said that Bushra had been examined by a doctor at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and was suffering from blurred vision as well as a black spot in the right eye.
“She also complained of headache and flashes in the right eye,” the document stated.
While the report could not be independently verified, the PTI, in a statement, said that the jailed former first lady had been diagnosed with posterior vitreous detachment along with myopia and astigmatism.
It merits a mention that her husband and jailed former premier Imran Khan also underwent an eye-related procedure at PIMS last month.
