Former Pakistani cricketer Aamer Sohail is being slammed by social media after his comments about Karachi during live commentary at a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars went viral.
Many called the comment demeaning and demanded that he be removed from the broadcast.
During the match, the production team aired a video package comparing Karachi and Lahore. Reacting to it on air, Sohail said the director had left out something essential to Karachi’s identity.
“One thing our director forgot to show is that the thing you see most in Karachi is paan ki pichkariyan,” he said. “If that is not there, then you are not explaining Karachi correctly. The sound of the pichkari, we miss that.”
The comment, delivered during live broadcast, spread quickly on social media and triggered a wave of backlash. Many viewers called it disrespectful to Karachi and its residents.
“This is an extremely vile thing to say,” one user wrote. Others demanded a public apology, calling the remark ignorant.
“Aamer Sohail has gone completely crazy,” another post read. Several users went further, saying he should be removed from the commentary panel altogether.
Paan ki pichkari refers to the act of spitting paan in public spaces, a habit often associated with littering and poor civic hygiene.
Using it as a defining symbol of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and financial capital, struck many viewers as a cheap shot dressed up as humour.
