How many people were evacuated from Afghanistan so far?
|
|
I came across this Infographic by Al Jazeera which explains how many people have been evacuated from Afghanistan a week after the Taliban took over.
Check it out here.
Stats
According to official statements and local reports, at least 28,000 people have been evacuated so far.
The US, which has stationed thousands of troops to secure the airport, has set a deadline to complete the evacuations by August 31. But there are up to 15,000 Americans and 50,000- 60,000 Afghan allies who need to be evacuated, according to the Biden administration.
Other updates
The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) pledged on Sunday to help achieve peace in Afghanistan.
The organisation urged “the future Afghan leadership” and the international community to work together to ensure that Afghanistan is never used again as a platform or safe haven for “terrorists”.

One billion children at ‘extremely high risk’ of the impact of the climate crisis – UNICEF
|
|
A new report from UNICEF analysed the risks of climate change for children. It found that one billion children — nearly half of the world’s 2.2 billion — live in countries that are categorised as “extremely high-risk”.
Stats
330 million children are highly exposed to riverine flooding, 400 million children are highly exposed to cyclones, 600 million children are highly exposed to vector borne diseases.
What needs to be done?
We need to invest in climate adaptation and resilience in key services for children.
Provide children with climate education and greens skills, critical for their adaptation and preparation for the effects of climate change.
Include young people in all national, regional and international climate negotiations and decisions.
